Sonore offers the most innovative advances in Japanese musical creativity.
Sonore is an independent record label that was created by Franck Stofer in 1998. The specificity of our project is derived from the handful of adventurous artists grouped under the Sonore label. Although each artist has a unique approach to 'composition', collectively, their creativity and originality forges a strong link between them.
The aim of Sonore is to support and promote these artists worldwide by producing and releasing their musical works for distribution. With a focus on today's electronic/computer music scene, Sonore's objective is embedded in the desire to explore and encourage new forms of enjoyable music that are often categorized as 'experimental', even if the spectrum of this music is wider by definition.
Jean-Alain Sidi joined the project in 2004 to create the music publishing company Jaapan SARL together with Franck Stofer. Now, the Sonore label has been integrated into the Jaapan company, providing a vital balance between production and publishing work. Jaapan's headquarters are based in France (Montpellier) with a representative office currently located in Tokyo.
Opening our office in Tokyo was a significant step forward in Sonore's development. The idea behind our decision to launch a branch office in Tokyo was to be closer to the artists we support in order to better understand their work, as well as to pursue the research initiated during the writing and publishing of the encyclopaedic "Japanese Independent Music" book (2001). By experiencing everyday life in Japan we hope to tear away the exotic veil that obscures this music from achieving the recognition it deserves.
With our unceasing exploration of the Japanese music scene, we collected an extensive knowledge of existing artists and labels. Through the course of our research, we often were able to gain access to quality music hardly known anywhere in the world, including Japan. Consequently, the idea of opening a specialized Japanese modern music online shop on the Sonore website naturally came to mind.
Sonore online shop is more of a musical digest than a traditional record store. Although we sometimes provide special promotions centring on a particular label or artist, our goal is not to be exhaustive, but to offer a flexible and fair selection of recent and/or essential releases. Our selection ranges from experimental electronic, meaning computer music and its affiliated variations, to all forms of enjoyable music regardless of their primary form.
