V/A Disco_r.dance Vol.1 (DISCO_R.DANCE, DSCRD-001, CD 2006) electronica / other Price: € 18.00 |
This double disk compilation is the first release of the disco_r.dance label, which serves as a recorded ouput for the londonian events of the same name. They've mainly gathered electronica acts, but have also welcomed performance artists, poets, magicians...And so, even though most of these 32 tracks consist in dark, twisted compositions, a pretty open-minded spirit breezes through: there's digital folk by Tuung, bastard techno-rock by Agaskodo Teliverek, Bedouin Ascent's peculiar mix of Arab music and breakbeats, a short tale by Guy J. Jackson and many more surprises. In fact, many of the more "conventional" tracks offer an original perspective on a genre coming short of fresh blood. The great ECD is given the remix treatment by Ugh from Satanicpornocultshop, who also deliver a particularly breathtaking track, shattering pipa, percussion and ghostly Delay Lama all over Kylie's pretty digital world, before abandoning her in a lonely part of the forest. Comes with 5 different covers.

V/A International Rekorder (HUNDERTZWEI*, HUN-01, CD 2006) experimental / pop Price: € 14.00 |
17 countries, 17 tracks, tied together by a taste for lo-fi sounds and off-road melodies. It's very refreshing to hear artists with a great attitude who aren't trying to become the next poster boys, and it's also a delight to hear daring music from unusual places (Turkey, Israel, Poland). There's a silly lambada fake, a slightly creepy disco banger, Russian surf-rock, ethereal lullabies, accordion-heavy reggae-hip hop, all for the sake of fun, fun, fun.

V/A Monophonic Ensemble (MEGADOLLY, MD-0604, CD 2006) electronica / pop Price: € 17.00 |
Forget about those Flaming Lips and Bjork reissues in Dolby Surround, Back To Mono! Yasuda Toshiyuki gathered a bunch of artists, stripped them off their stereophonic tricks, and we get to see what Towa Tei, Takeo Toyama and friends are like naked. Si Begg draws out the joker card of sound crispness and builds his track around a single slap of synth, while vocal quintet Pecombo try to get Nintendo game soundtracks out of their heads and Uchihashi Kazuhisa goes his own little business knitting together swirls of analog noise. Always the clever head of the class, Satoru Wono mates dusty rhumba grooves with grainy digital glitches and comes up with a new dance. In the astounding closer Yasuda rearranges bits taken from the other tracks into a quirky, funky sonata.

V/A Love (LA TROISIEME NOTE, TN-102, CD 2005) pop Price: € 17.00 |
A beautifully sequenced compilation that also serves as a romantic document of the hippy era (from 1965 to 1970) featuring choice selections from Bill Fay, The Free Design, Harper's Bizarre, Marco Guryan, Harry Nilsson, Jackie & Roy, and The Zombies among others. In the true spirit of eclecticism, the seemingly incongrous material flows with an amazing coherence. Veering effortlessly between the shadowy British pop of The Turtles' "You Showed Me", the light funk of Donovan's jazz foray "Get Thy Bearings", the joyous hipster shuffle of Blossom Dearie's "Long Daddy Green", to the tropical/lounge inflections of Ars Nova's "Walk On The Sand", “Love” is a uniquely refreshing cocktail of pop sophistication. V/A Nippon Gueva Gueva (NEJI, NEJI-90, CD-R 2005) junk rock / electronic Price: € 9.00 |
Another strange affair coming from Satanicpornocultshop’s CD imprint, this compilation offers a broader and even more confusing panorama of the Osaka-based collective’s network. There’s not-even-so-leftfield J-rock, buzzing electronics, scratched-out punkrock, pachinko drum n’ bass, your monthly share of enka and plenty more wonderful things to grab on this 15-track, 60-minute CD, making it a great introduction to the Neji and Satapo worlds or another great treat for fans. Featuring Ugh, Dag Shen Ma, the Eto Bando, Orionza, With The Leazents, Gab, and many others. (Luc Meier)

V/A Shock vs Crime!!! Eto Band Remixes (NEJI, NEJI-88, CD-R 2005) junk rock / electronica Price: € 9.00 |
The Eto Band’s spastic workouts get the remix treatment on this CD-R compilation, getting most of the extended Satanicpornocultshop galaxy to take care of their micro-ditties. Unsurprisingly, songs get longer and groovier, with some nasty, noisy shitstorms framing a collection of genre exercises in sleazy dance music. Good fun for the disco masses, although prior knowledge of Eto’s Matsuri or Eto Bando is a prerequisite – or you may end up thinking “Crime, Knife, Gun, Thanxxx!!!” really was a worldwide hit. V/A Off Site Composed Music Series (A BRUIT SECRET, ABS-101-102, 2xCD 2002) experimental / onkyo Price: € 18.00 |
Off Site is a club run by Atsuhiro Ito where Taku Sugimoto, Toshimaru Nakamura, and Tetuzi Akiyama run an influential series of concerts that developed a new aesthetic dubbed "onkyo" by certain critics. This two-CD set presents something different, despite the fact that it features the same core of musicians and silence-based, ultra-reduced music.(...) Disc one starts with a rather comical composition by Otomo Yoshihide for his 16-piece Portable Orchestra, here playing only home appliances (to hear the group on more regular instruments, check Deluxe Improvisation Festival 2001: Day Two). The sounds of radio, shaver, camera, food mixer, etc., follow one another in an on/off fashion that gives the impression of an in-store demonstration. Following is a set of three acoustic guitar trios (by Burkhard Stangl, Sugimoto, and Mari Furuta) performed by Akiyama, Nakamura, and Sugimoto. The spacy prepared guitars of "Echo" (bowed below the bridge) stand as a highlight. Worth noting on disc two: Sachiko M.'s "5 Seconds" for accordionist Shuichi Chino and Sugimoto's "Punkt" -- incredibly sparse -- performed by Yoshihide on acoustic guitar. (...)This is extremely quiet music on the verge of hoax, maybe even more so than comparable compilations, but it is not without some force of attraction and it honestly documents the first important development of avant-garde music in the 21st century.
