Conceal Baptized Troopers (BRAIN ESCAPE SANDWICH RECORDS, BESR-006, CD 2005) electronica / hip hop Price: € 16.00 |
Conceal brings Satanicpornocultshop’s Ugh together with ambient tweaker and noted visual artist Bayion, owner of the Brain Escape Sandwich label. Whereas much of the beauty of Satapo’s explosive sampling work lies in the way it deals with tiny splinters of sonic nostalgia, Conceal goes for a much more controlled but no less compelling click-hop attack on “Baptized Troopers”, veering from the slick and danceable to the convulsive and demented, making out with the beat and screwing the motorik. Highlighting their kinship with the likes of Prefuse 73 and, most notably, the Mouse on Mars of “Niun Niggung” and “Idiology”, this is excellent, and unescapably fun, beat-oriented material. | Baiyon is the solo project of Kuramitsu Tomohisa, head of Brain Escape Sandwich Records and half of electro hip hop duo Conceal. Usually associated with violence, here noise sounds like the desperate efforts of a brain struggling to dig back long lost childhood images and soundscapes, sometimes threatening to crash down. The beauty of it all lies as much in the original memories as in the raw pieces of digital mucus they've become. Though close to the works of Oval or Fennesz, this music really stands out in terms of sobriety and precision. Most tracks are rather short and some feature punkish beats and chords, but most of the time Baiyon patiently lets raw, grainy textures drift away freely and bounce over each other, allowing them to brew their complex aroma long after they're gone, leaving us with vague recollections of a school, a funfair, or the distorted echoes of muzak in an empty parking lot. | |||||
